There is a very well known longevity issue with the original E31 BMW Lemforder supplied ball joint bushings. The plasticky transparent material used in the original bushing boots does not hold up to the elements, it cracks very quickly, dirt gets into and destroys it .

I was absolutely floored to see almost every rear OEM ball joint bushing torn on my 59k mile 850ci ONLY 5 years and just 6k miles after a complete rear subframe refresh!
